Orbis International, alongside Fundamental XR, a leader in innovative immersive medical training technology, won a coveted Brandon Hall Group Gold award for excellence in the Best Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR, VR) Solution category.

The win was announced on December 4, 2025. The winners are listed at https://excellenceawards.brandonhall.com/winners/

About Our Winning Entry

The awarded program is a jointly developed VR surgical training solution created with Orbis to expand access to high-quality, standardized ophthalmic education worldwide. The project delivers a scalable, evidence-based simulation platform that helps train the next generation of eye-care professionals through realistic, hands-on practice, regardless of geographic or resource limitations.

Through their partnership, Orbis and Fundamental XR are expanding access to high-quality ophthalmic training in support of Orbis’s mission to restore sight and prevent blindness worldwide. Fundamental XR provides the training infrastructure needed to scale surgical education, while Orbis deploys this capability through its clinical expertise and network of partner hospitals to reach eye care professionals across diverse settings. Together, the organizations are accelerating skills transfer, supporting sustainable local care, and demonstrating how innovative tools, when applied with clear purpose, can create measurable and lasting impact.

“Earning a Gold award from Brandon Hall Group is a powerful validation of what’s possible when technology and mission-driven organizations work together,” said Richard Vincent, CEO, Fundamental XR. “Our partnership with Orbis International demonstrates how immersive simulation can meaningfully scale ophthalmic training and support educators and clinicians around the world. We’re honored to help advance this work.”

“This recognition underscores the transformative power of collaboration and innovation in global eye health,” said Hunter Cherwek, Vice President of Clinical Services and Technologies at Orbis. “We are breaking down barriers to surgical training and empowering eye care professionals everywhere to deliver sight-saving care.”

“The Excellence in Technology Awards celebrate the most forward-thinking innovations shaping the future of learning, talent, and human capital management. This year’s winners exemplify how technology can unlock new possibilities, improving performance, enabling smarter decision-making, and transforming how organizations support and develop their people,” said Rachel Cooke, Brandon Hall Group Chief Operating Officer and leader of the Excellence Awards program.

Entries were evaluated by a panel of veteran, independent senior industry experts, Brandon Hall Group analysts, and executives based upon these criteria: fit the need, program design, functionality, innovation, and overall measurable benefits.

Excellence Award winners are scheduled to be honored at Brandon Hall Group's HCM Excellence Conference, February 9–12, 2026, at the Hilton West Palm Beach, Florida. Select winners will also serve as presenters in breakout sessions, sharing their leading practices during the conference.

“Our Technology Awards are built on a rigorous evaluation framework that measures true innovation, functional excellence, and quantifiable business impact. The solution providers and organizations recognized this year reflect the highest standards in the industry, demonstrating how technology can accelerate capability, efficiency, and results,” said Mike Cooke, Brandon Hall Group Chief Executive Officer.

About Orbis International

Orbis International works around the world to prevent blindness and restore sight for children and adults in places where eye care is out of reach—so vision problems don’t make it harder to learn, earn a living, or enjoy life. Around 1.1 billion people live with vision loss, but with the right care, 90% of it is completely avoidable. That is why Orbis trains doctors, nurses, and other eye care professionals to provide care in their own communities—and works to make sure people of all ages can access the eye exams, glasses, medicine, and surgeries they need to protect and restore their sight. Orbis began this work more than 40 years ago with the Flying Eye Hospital, a teaching hospital on a plane that brings expert training and care where they’re needed most. Today, we also work with local hospitals and clinics across Africa, Asia, and Latin America to make eye care available to more people, and we use and develop technology—like our award-winning Cybersight e-learning and telehealth platform, artificial intelligence screening, and virtual reality training—to help eye care teams treat patients more effectively. Orbis ranks in the top 3% of U.S. charities, having earned top marks for transparency and accountability from Charity Navigator, GuideStar, and the Better Business Bureau.
